(Throw-Back) Photo Of The Day “Returning To Green”

Returning To Green

This shot is from a cold war era Nike missile base is located off U.S. Route 9 on Jake Brown Road in Old Bridge Township, NJ.  The buildings in the background were used as living quarters for the families of the soldiers on the base.  The playground in the foreground is one of the few amenities of an off-base life the children were exposed given.  When I took these shots in January of 2009, most of the living quarters were still standing, except for a couple that had fallen victim to fire (probably arson).  Everything was in sever disrepair and nature was reclaiming the site.  Since that visit, I had gone back to capture more shots, but the whole area had been leveled.  So sad.  This shot was captured at ƒ8 and ISO100 for 1/250 of a second, and then altered in PhotoShop.  The skewed angle and the B&W really give this shot a eerie feel, but the green tree protruding through the rusted playground equipment gives this shot an element of peace and hope.  It’s a nice juxtaposition.
